In designing the form of Merlin, our primary duty was to translate the principles we laid down in the design book into 3d form. In doing so, we looked into smooth yet sharp forms with great elegance and vitality.

Visual Inspiration

Design Process

To foster the design process and eliminate the initial time wasted by miscommunication with the engineers, we used Gravity Sketch to create a rough mockup. Later, we used the file as a reference point in building out the final model.

Sizing & Portion Study

The design of Merlin was conceived through countless meetings with the engineering team to ensure all parts made sense and served their purpose. Below is the picture

of the head of the engineering team going through the guidelines we must follow in one of our earlier meetings.

Strength of Merlin

Merlin houses a series of unique qualities that sets it apart from its competitors.

+ Cargo Shipment

+ Surveillance & 4D mapping

Designed to have Minimal Drag

An airplane's winglet is one contributor to creating additional drag. To minimize the effect, we lifted enough of the amount after negotiating with the engineering team then elevated it as a design element.

All flying objects must have the least drag possible to maximize fuel efficiency.

Together with the engineering team, we studied different vehicles and produced an aerodynamically accurate design.

The problem with aerial vehicles' lift & cruise style is that they are prone to tilting forward while aviating.

To address the issue, we decided to tilt the main wing at a certain angle so that the natural flow of air

would mitigate the problem.

Cargo Compartment

The primary purpose of Merlin is to serve as a cargo drone, carrying up to 80KG of goods safely and quickly.

The cargo compartment is designed to be easily replaced with other functions as well, including but not limited to water containers for fire fighting use, warhead container for military service, and more.

UAM DRONE DESIGN

Merlin is the next-generation unmanned aerial vehicle being developed by the company to house 200 kg
(70 kg of payload) cargo transport and reconnaissance capability, in addition to self-driving ability in preparation for the UAM advancement. Currently, the product is being developed for the initial flight by early 2024.
